An Explanation of Medical Terms
Angiogram
An x-ray produced with dye injected into the arteries of the part of the body to be examined

Anterior
In the front

Arteries
Vessels that carry blood from the heart to the various parts of the body

Arterioles
Small branches of the arteries

Blood clot (Hematoma)
A semi-solid mass of blood; coagulated blood

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
A fluid flowing in and around the brain and spinal cord that bathes and cushions the neural tissues. CSF looks like water

Cervical spine
The neck area of the spine

Cisterns
A reservoir for fluids in the brain

Concussion
An injury of varying severity to the brain from a jarring blow; damage to the brain from concussions is cumulative

Cranium
The part of the skull bone that encloses the brain

CT
Computerized tomography; a type of x-ray that uses computer enhancement to remove shadows from the area under examination

Decompression
A surgical procedure for removing pressure on various structures of the body

Discs
In the spine, cushion-like pads between pairs of vertebrae

Fusion
A surgical process of fixing or hardening pieces of bone
